Never Buy Potting Soil Again

This is the new thing I've recently started taking out of the trash: abandoned planters with soil still in them. The big square one has pretty nice potting soil in it, which I'm going to hold on to for the next time I need to repot a plant, or something like that. The other two are going to end up in my compost pile. I've thrown some other abandoned soil in it already. All of which brings me around to pointing out that my compost piles (there are in fact two), are in serious need of expansion...

HAHA! Did you come to my deck and take that picture???

I have hung on to one lone pot (planters I mean) (threw the rest away last week) something is growing in it, but I seriously think it is TWO SHOOTS OF GRASS. As in lawn I mean. (jeez I'm not trying for a trend or anything here!) I keep watering anyway.

I must be your brown-thumbed sister.

Composting the potting soil is a great idea. Especially if your compost gets good and hot because it will kill any seeds or other nasties that might be in there.

Getting the compost hot is a problem. We throw most of our garden waste and all our kitchen vegetable waste, plus a certain amount of paper, egg cartons, occasional cotton fabrics, etc onto ours, and it's never hot enough to kill anything. Just not enough material rotting fast enough to heat up. Nice and warm for the field mice, however!

My compost piles are pretty primitive. When I bought my house, I found some galvanized fencing in the garage, so I rolled it up and started throwing yard waste in that. The first one is mostly leaves, at least on the bottom, then I started a second. One of my projects for when I'm home later this summer is to build a proper composting structure of some kind (after I put up a new fence...). I'm thinking of using the same wire fencing, but making it suare and covering it with black landscaping cloth. I have no idea whether my compost piles are hot enough to kill seeds, or even to keep a mouse warm, for that matter!
